Suman Kalyanpur: The Golden Voice That Will Echo Forever

Mumbai: The world of Indian music bid farewell to one of its most cherished voices as legendary playback singer Suman Kalyanpur passed away peacefully on 31 May 2026 at her Mumbai residence. She was 89. With her passing, an era of timeless melodies and unmatched grace comes to a close, leaving behind a musical legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Born as Suman Hemmady on 28 January 1937 in Dhaka, then part of British India, she moved to Mumbai with her family during childhood. From an early age, her remarkable singing talent stood out, eventually guiding her into the world of Indian cinema during the 1950s. Over the next three decades, she became one of the most respected and beloved voices in Indian playback music.

Known for the extraordinary softness and purity of her voice, Kalyanpur carved a unique identity in an industry filled with legendary performers. Her songs carried emotion with effortless elegance, whether expressing romance, longing, devotion, or joy. Audiences across India embraced her music, and her voice became synonymous with the golden age of Hindi cinema.

Among her most celebrated songs are classics such as “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche,” “Na Tum Hamen Jano,” “Na Na Karte Pyar Tumhin Se,” “Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye,” and “Dil Ek Mandir Hai.” Her memorable duets with Mohammed Rafi remain treasured gems in Indian music history.

Kalyanpur is survived by her daughter, Charul Agni, and other family members. Her final rites were conducted with full state honours in Mumbai, a testament to the immense respect she commanded throughout her life and career. Tributes poured in from across the country, with leaders, fellow artists, and countless admirers remembering her as one of India’s most graceful and gifted singers.
